Laffan Refinery Inauguration
After winning a competitive pitch to produce the Inauguration of the Laffan Refinery, the WRG Qatar team developed and produced a state-of-the-art show in three months using the latest 3D technology on a scale never before seen in Qatar.
The Laffan Refinery is the first condensate refinery in Qatar and one of the largest in the world, supplying to markets across the globe. The opening performance highlighted the importance of these emerging markets with a fusion piece composed by the world famous Taiko drummer Joji Hirota. Asian and Qatari drummers performed to 3D graphics weaving amongst them and animating to their drumbeats.
A 14 metre by 6 metre 3D foil screen and a rear projection screen of the same size were installed in the structure where the event was held. WRG erected the 9 metre high structure over two weeks with the help of 156 crew and 12 tonnes of AV and rigging equipment.
A 3D virtual tour took the 350 guests on an educational journey through the Refinery, meeting some of the operational team as 3D holograms along the way, who highlighted the Refinery’s significant environmental and safety initiatives.
Innovative and high impact, the 3D technology produced in-house by the WRG team, wowed the audience. This was made all the more impressive by the fact that they appeared together as 3D holograms.
The Laffan Refinery was officially launched when His Highness the Emir lit up a map of Qatar, which rose dramatically out of the floor with the help of electric hydraulics. Upon touching the map, the Emir triggered a 3D graphic sequence symbolising the Refinery’s reach to global markets. This photo opportunity was featured in numerous national news publications.
Afterwards, Qatargas described the event as “flawless” and “very special”. In addition, the client praised the WRG Qatar team for its “professionalism, dedication and creativity, which delivered such an outstanding event for the company”.
