77 Mta Celebration Event
By the end of 2010, Qatar realised His Highness the Emir’s vision for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity of 77 million tonnes per annum. In order to celebrate this historical achievement, Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas and RasGas selected WRG Qatar LLC to devise a creative concept to communicate the magnitude of this achievement and produce one of the biggest events ever seen in the country.
WRG were commissioned to design and construct a bespoke venue at Ras Laffan Industrial City to include two exhibition spaces, an auditorium for 1200 people and a lunch area. WRG designed and constructed a 57m diameter circular structure, standing 20 meters tall and with a roof capacity of 50 tonnes. The completed ‘Tank’ is now seen as one of the largest semi-permanent, circular event spaces in the world.
Guests then entered a circular environment, with a central water pool as the stage and surrounded by a 180m x 9m high 360 degree projection screen. Several world-first performances wowed the audience. In the opening performance, silk performers and aerialists representing engineers told the story of Qatar’s marine heritage with the aerialists dramatically diving into the water pool and disappearing. For the finale performance, 21 world class aerialists from around the world appeared above the audience’s heads forming a ‘human wall’ on which scenes of Qatari culture were projected. The entire soundtrack for the show was created by a specialist composer in the UK who took inspiration from Qatari music.
Impressions of the event were that it raised the bar for future events in Qatar. It made people feel proud of what Qatar had achieved and the unique films succeeded in bringing His Highness the Emir closer to his people.
